Use of Tarot Cards in Divination

Surprisingly, tarot cards reflected traditional symbolism popular in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance. The earliest Tarots were related to celebrations, which preceded the Christian season of Lent. Occult decks later confused and obscured the symbolism related to Christianity. Eventually, Tarot cards become associated with mystery and magic and were widely used for fortune telliong in Italy. The early 1900s saw the popularity of Tarot increase with the publication of the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, which took the step of including symbolic images related to divinatory meanings on the numeric cards.
